Event Description:
NEW DATE: SUNDAY MAY 1 from 12-3pm
Bob and Connie Van Ersvelde will be doing a public bird banding program at Diamond Lake with Poweshiek County Conservation. Bird banding is the process of catching birds, identifying them, recording some information and fitting them with a leg band. Birds with who are found or recaptured later are a great source of information. Bird banders can learn things like how old a bird is, and how big its home range is.
Fun Fact: A Laysan Albatross was first banded on Midway Island in 1956 - when she was estimated to be at least 5 years old. She has been identified by the same band multiple times since then, including after laying an egg in 2021 at age 70!
