The assistant coach will work with the head coach to develop and maintain a positive student-athlete experience that focuses on student-athlete development, building an inclusive culture, recruiting elite prospective student-athletes, and contributing positively to the College’s Athletic Department. The coach will help create purpose and value to the College’s and the Athletic Department missions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the head coach to plan practices centered around the overall development of the student-athletes
  • Coach position specific skills on offense while keeping defense as a focal point
  • The Assistant Coach will be responsible for film breakdown and assist the Head Coach with game planning for opponents;
  • Assistant coach will also aid in conducting team, group, individual meetings with students that will focus on skill development and team culture building
  • Will work with head coach and enrollment office to identfiy, target, recruit and yield high-level student-athletes
  • Represent Grinnell College at recruiting events
  • Coaching duties could include, but are not limited to: travel planning, equipment management, maintenance of facility, monitoring student-athlete academic success
  • Serve as assistant event manager or assistant strength and conditioning coach within Athletics Department


  • The ability to communicate effectively with prospective student-athletes, their families, and other constituencies
  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university
  • Proficient personal computer skills
  • Proven the ability to effectively partner across various demographics, levels of leadership, and college constituencies
  • An ability to effectively coach and develop basketball drills and strategies
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Values diversity, equity, and inclusion
