Working location(s) for the Co-op position varies based on the division. Some positions can be based in our Grinnell, Iowa, office or remotely in one of the following states: Arizona, Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.

Claims - The Claims team delivers on our contractual promises. When a customer experiences a loss. Because the company’s purpose is to help customers in their time of need, good customer service skills are paramount. Our promise is to return policyholders to their pre-loss condition. Curious, conflict resolution, customer-focused, a desire to help others, proactive, innovative, organized, and a ood communicator are key skills in this division.
Underwriting, Sales, and Service - Underwriting is the process of evaluating insurance applications to determine the risk involved, insurability, and best pricing for the policy. The sales team works directly with independent agents to sell Grinnell Mutual insurance products (auto, home, farm, business), and the service department works directly with agents and policyholders to troubleshoot, answer questions, and route customers to the resources they need. Seventy percent of the company’s revenue comes from USS. Detail-oriented, comfortable with customer interactions, customer-focused, analytic, and problem-solver are key skills in this division.
Enterprise Solutions – Many organizations refer to this division as Information Technology (IT). This team provides and maintains innovative technology solutions for employees, the agents who sell our products, our mutual member companies, and our policyholders. Empowered teams in the ES division use Agile methodologies in every aspect of their work - Applicaiton Development, Service Managment, Quality Assurance, and Security. Problem solving, good communicator, collaborative, accountable, interested in self-development and learning, architecture, and infrastructure are key skills in this division.
Finance - Finance maintains our accounting, payroll, and investments to ensure a strong financial position. The organization’s financial story is told through the reports created by this division. The team follows regulatory guidelines related to business accounting and securities. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and analytical thinking are key skills in this division.
Assurance, Advisory, and Accounting Services - This team has a broad range of responsibilities, including meeting with areas across the company to conduct internal audits and help implement controls as processes are developed, and doing quality-control reviews of claims adjusters. The department also provides services for mutual members such as financial reporting, payroll, and tax work for mutual members. Detail-oriented, enjoys research, enjoys variety, open to new ideas, good communicator (both written and verbal) are key skills in this division.
Reinsurance - Reinsurance is insurance for insurance companies. The division helps protect our mutual members’ insurance companies by sharing the financial risk from catastrophic losses that the smaller companies cannot absorb. It also provides consultative support to mutual members for many aspects of their business. Customer-focused, problem-solver, analytic, good communicator, strong computer skills in database languages and business intelligence programs, to gather data and present it in ways it can be readily consumed, and detailed oriented are key skills in this division.
Marketing and Customer Experience (MCX) - The MCX department has a broad range of responsibilities that touch both internal (other departments and divisions) and external (agent, mutual, and policyholder) customers. The department handles event planning, UX/UI design and research, advertising, community relations, digital and print publications, digital advertising, social media, marketing materials, and corporate branding. Creativity, collaborative, analytical skills, and good communicator (both written and verbal) are key skills in this division.
Strategic Insights - The Strategic Insights Department works across the organization to support strategic planning, market intelligence, and competitive intelligence. This includes working with internal and external sources of data and information to identify, understand, and communicate trends and changes within the insurance industry and their impact to Grinnell Mutual. Analytical, connecting multiple sources of information, translating data into insights, good communicator, stakeholder-focused, and adaptability to change in a high paced environment are key skills in this division
Talent Development (TD) - Many organizations refer to this division as Human Resources. Its responsibilities include employee recruitment and retention, employee benefits and award-winning wellness program, belonging and inclusion initiatives, and training and development opportunities for employees, agents, and mutual members. It also includes Business Excellence () which is an area that helps divisions create efficiencies in the work they do. As a whole, the division focuses on the entire employment experience and works to positively affect Grinnell Mutual’s engagement and culture. Customer-focused, detail-oriented, creative, good communicator, and ability to maintain confidentiality are key skills in this division.
