Description

Test Engineers are responsible for development and execution of testing that delivers quality, while supporting the business objectives of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company and their customers. They serve as a member of a cross functional Agile Software Development Team, completing any/all tasks to ensure team success.

This position can be based in our Grinnell, Iowa, office or remotely in one of the following states: Arizona, Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.

  • Designs, develops, and defines test scripts and test plans based on requirements to ensure quality and performance outcomes.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in Object-Oriented Programming languages and automation testing techniques that adhere to best practices specific to Grinnell Mutual.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to refactor manual test cases to automated test scripts.
  • Executes tests and analyzes outcomes to ensure new and updated applications meet or exceed quality standards and user requirements before released to a production environment.
  • Recognizes risks and identifies areas for continuous improvements to maximize testing coverage and reduce testing cycle time.
  • Logs, tracks, and verifies resolution defects against requirement criteria.
  • Evaluates data and metrics used to measure the SDLC and identify gaps.
  • Remains current with changes in career field and evaluates the feasibility of incorporating new techniques into new and supported applications.
  • Contributes to product planning using Agile methodologies and participates in ensuring stories are complete, accurate and ready to be developed before the team commits to them.
  • Collaborates and takes ownership of team delivery to ensure highest probability of success for team.
  • Adheres to work intake, prioritization, change management, architecture governance and other required best practices of Grinnell Mutual.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or two years Test Engineer experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  •  Guidewire Policy Center experience is preferred.
  • Exhibits strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Exhibits a continuous improvement mindset towards all duties.
  • Contributes to the growth of technology at Grinnell Mutual by sharing expertise with others. Educates others, adding to the total technical capabilities of Grinnell Mutual.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, schedule and meet deadlines while concurrently managing multiple tasks. Must be able to work with multiple interruptions.
  • Working knowledge of Property and Casualty Insurance preferred. Willingness to develop a working knowledge of industry and Grinnell Mutual specific business practices. Must be able to appropriately apply learned knowledge as it relates to responsibilities of the position.
  • Experience with IT industry test management and test automation tools preferred.
  • Experience testing client/server and web-based applications preferred.
  • Ability to recognize risks and collaborate to build mitigation plans.
  • Knowledge of testing methodologies that apply to Agile and iterative Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Exhibits understanding of all phases of software testing and able to document.
  • Experience using testing tools for technical testing such as SQL, SOAPUI, Automation (Java Script or a similar object-oriented language), as well as those for defect and test management preferred.
  • Experience using automation tools, including scripting with an object-oriented language preferred.
  • Knowledge of common testing methods, tools, testing types, terminology and industry practices with proven ability to assess requirements and impacts of the proposed changes.
  • Demonstrated ability to document and share knowledge with others. Must be able to work with audiences of various levels of ability about the subject matter and confirm knowledge transfer.
  • Demonstrated oral, written, and presentation skills to both technical and non-technical personnel. Exhibits self-assurance and a creative aptitude.
  • Ability to work in a harmonious manner with co-employees, agents, vendors, and supervisor.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to keep regular work schedule and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
  • Ability to represent Grinnell Mutual at selected professional conference approximate 1-2 times per year. May include overnight stays and travel.
