Drake Community Library (Grinnell Public) Assistant Director with an emphasis in Youth Services (full-time, non-exempt position)

Full-time position, starting wage $28.44/hour

Drake Community Library seeks a collaborative, engaging Assistant Director to lead our busy Youth Services Department and assist the Library Director in all aspects of library administration as needed.  Hours may include evenings and weekends to support general library operations as well as youth programming events.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Plans and manages youth library services, operations, and programs, including planning and implementing programs such as story times and summer programs; and monitoring the work of assigned staff and volunteers.
  • Performs outreach for library services and collaborates with community organizations; assesses the community’s information and literacy needs; and prepares and presents lessons on the use of the library and associated collections for children and college students.
  • Plans and manages the annual budget for the youth services area, including monitoring expenditures; allocating funds; approving requests; and researching and analyzing financial and operational material to forecast department needs
  • Performs collection development and cataloging duties, including purchasing, organizing, and maintaining materials. Ensures materials are relevant and accessible.
  • Provides reference services within the youth services area to patrons, including providing guidance on selecting library materials.
  • Supervises staff by providing work assignment and review, training, administering employment and disciplinary processes, and evaluating performance.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Master's degree in library science, ability to acquire State Library of Iowa Public Youth Services Endorsement, and three years of professional library experience, including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

  • A pre-employment physical examination is required.

  • A pre-employment drug test is required.

  • Residency within fifteen (15) miles of the Public Safety Building to the employee’s property line within one year from the date of hire is required.
