POSITION SUMMARY

Imam/The Muslim Prayer Leader is responsible for preparation of sermon and leadership of our Gumaa Prayer each Friday during the academic year. Additionally, this person will serve as a member of the Religious Life Staff and may be called on for advising and guidance about Islam and Muslim practice by members of the community. This staff member will be engaged in planning and scheduling of guest speakers, dialogue(s) and programming with Religious Life Staff. Each year, the prayer leader organizes a trip to the mosque to celebrate holy days, in particular, the Eid celebrations when they occur while in session. Muslims of all traditions and all genders are encouraged to apply.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for preparation and leadership of Gumaa service (Friday prayer service for students, faculty, and staff).
  • Plan and lead campus festivals and holy day celebrations with all interested students. (Includes assistance with transport to mosque for Eid(s) or other cultural/religious events).
  • Advise/Support Muslim community.
  • Attend department meetings. Administrative duties. (Including regular email communications and marketing regular and special events).
  • Assist students in planning guest speaker(s) or religious discussions on campus.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Seven years of related experience in Islamic leadership
  • At least two days a week on campus required
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft systems
  • Commitment to the College’s articulated mission and core values

  • Successful candidates will have the ability to facilitate and execute events both large and small
  • Successful candidates will create strong connections with mosques and Islamic education centers around Iowa
  • Successful candidates will manage time effectively to prepare for service and celebrations of holy days
  • Successful candidates can effectively work with others without any formal authority
  • Successful candidates are trusted, authentic and self-aware

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred
  • An educational background that would be consistent with a more learned scholar of the tradition
