The City of Grinnell, Iowa (population 9,564) is seeking candidates for the position of Public Services Director. The incumbent is retiring after more than 40 years with the City of Grinnell. Grinnell is the largest community in Poweshiek County, located adjacent to Interstate 80, approximately forty (40) minutes east of Des Moines and sixty (60) minutes west of Iowa City. Grinnell is a full-service community with ample dining, retail, recreation, sporting, employment, cultural, and entertainment options. Requirements

Education Requirements and Experience:

The Public Service Director manages and leads the activities of a 17-member department including streets, parks, cemetery, recycling, and solid waste. This position is responsible for the department budget development and includes monitoring expenses. Requirements include progressively responsible supervisory experience and substantial work within or closely related to the disciplines listed above. Graduation from an accredited two- or four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, business management or related field is a plus. Candidates must have excellent customer service and communications skills, an impeccable safety record and strong adherence to all safety procedures, excellent and demonstrated fiscal management skills, and a proven history of employee management. Salary and Benefits:

  • The position is an FLSA exempt position
  • Salary: Negotiable DOQ; current range is $87,122 - $113,259
  • Generous benefit package including paid vacation, sick leave, personal leave, holidays, Iowa Public Retirement System contributions, and group health and life insurance.

Certification: 

Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within three months of hire. The successful candidate must pass a physical examination and drug screen.

Additional Requirements: 

  • Must live within 15 miles of the Grinnell Public Safety Building within six months of hire.
  • Tobacco use for new hires prohibited for duration of employment.
