Smithsonian Film Series - America’s Secret Space Heroes: Space Shuttle and The Day We Walked on the Moon

Grinnell College presents two free film showings as part of the celebration of the 250th Anniversary of America.

The first film, America’s Secret Space Heroes: Space Shuttle — see how NASA engineers met the challenge to build a spacecraft that can launch like a rocket and land like an airplane.

The second film, The Day We Walked on the Moon — revisits the first lunar landing in gripping real-time as it highlights the most perilous and triumphant moments.Total Run time for both films: 1 hr. 28 minutes.

Following the screening, Professor Emeritus of Physics, Dr. Robert Cadmus will present on the Grant O. Gale Observatory, lunar phases, space travel, and astronomical research. This program is part of Grinnell College’s Smithsonian Affiliate public film series, which features ten Smithsonian-produced films exploring different aspects of American life and history.

Running through November, the series takes place at the Strand 3 Theater at 10 am on specific Mondays. Each screening includes collaboration with community partners, faculty, and staff to connect the films to local experiences, Iowa history, and the broader American story—creating shared space for learning, reflection, and connection.
