Bookin’ It @ the Drake, a bi-monthly book discussion that meets at Drake Community Library, will hold its next meeting on Thursday, November 11 at 7p.m in the Story Room. The selection to be discussed is The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton.
The year is 1634, and the setting is the Saardam, a merchant ship on an eight-month voyage from Indonesia to Amsterdam. World-famous detective, Samuel Pipps, is being transported in shackles to his execution, and nearly as soon as the ship sets sail, frightening and seemingly demonic events unfold, leading to an impossible murder. Grimdark Magazine reviewer James Tivendale puts the novel on the “recommended” list, noting, “The Devil and the Dark Water is a well-written and ingeniously composed dark historical thriller. The tale features grim and gruesome moments aplenty, with content that is definitely for adults and is occasionally uncomfortable to read.” Kirkus Reviews calls the novel “a devilish sea saga that never runs out of cutthroat conspiracies.”
