Event Description:Featuring Keynote Speaker Daniel Van Sant from the Harkin Institute on the History of Section 504 Grinnell, IA – Grinnell College is proud to announce the opening celebration of the Patient No More exhibition, a powerful exploration of the historic 1977 protests that led to the signing of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The opening will take place on Wednesday, October 2 at 3:30pm in the Caulkins Room at the Drake Community Library. Daniel Van Sant, Director of Disability Policy from the Drake University Harkin Institute, will deliver the keynote address, speaking on the history and significance of Section 504. Following Van Sant’s presentation, guests will be invited to explore the Patient No More exhibit, which uncovers the inspiring stories of people with disabilities who, in April 1977, successfully organized nationwide protests to push for the enforcement of Section 504. This groundbreaking legislation made it illegal for any federally funded facility or program to discriminate against people with disabilities, but as of 1977, one crucial signature was still missing. After a 26-day occupation of the Federal Building in San Francisco, protesters achieved victory in what became the longest unarmed takeover of a federal building in U.S. history, securing the critical signature that brought the law into effect. Patient No More will be on display at the Drake Community Library through October 31. The exhibition features large print and braille copies of exhibition text, audio descriptions, and audio-described and captioned videos to ensure accessibility for all visitors. Exhibition Support: Patient No More is presented by the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University, made possible with support from California Humanities, and traveled by Exhibit Envoy.
