05/23/2016

Nominations are sought for the Grinnell Fourth of July parade grand marshal, and parade entry forms are now available.

Nominees for grand marshal should live in the Grinnell community and be a person who has displayed outstanding service, pride and commitment to the community, county, state and/or country. Areas of consideration include community service, personal accomplishment or awards, length of time living in the community, personal deeds and dedication to the community.

Those wishing to nominate a deserving individual for grand marshal should complete the nomination form online. Forms are also available at the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce office at 833 4th Ave. A selection committee will convene to review nominations and select this year’s grand marshal. Nominations are due June 15.

The Fourth of July parade will take place on Monday, July 4 at 5 p.m. There is no cost to enter a float in the parade, and those wishing to participate may fill out the entry form online or pick up a paper form at the chamber of commerce.

Fourth of July festivities will kick off on Saturday, July 2, with a block party event on Main St. between 4th and 5th Avenues from 7 to 11:30 p.m. and will include live music. This year's celebration is in conjunction with the Grinnell-Newburg All-Class Reunion, and the band Whiplash, comprised of Grinnell-Newburg alumni, will be performing along with other alumni bands. In addition to live music, there will be a beverage garden and kid activities. Admission is free.

A fireworks display will take place at dusk on Monday, July 4, at approximately 9:45 p.m. at Ahrens Park.

Grinnell on the Fourth activities are sponsored by Ahrens Park Foundation, Grinnell Mutual,  Grinnell College and the Grinnell Hotel-Motel Tax Committee.
