Event Description:

The defining quality of a psychopomp is that it bears the responsibility of guiding souls through a transition of life, often into death. Throughout many religions and spiritualities, they have been our conductors on journeys to worlds unknown. Inspired by the works and words of artist Stephen Appleby-Barr, this exhibition presents various representations of these mystical, whimsical, and occasionally grim figures.

Old Friends and Psychopomps features prints from the Grinnell College Museum of Art Collection that introduce viewers to companions that, while otherworldly, can cast immense reflections of the world we know. This exhibition, which will be on view in the museum alongside Stephen Appleby-Barr: Correspondence, pays homage to the artist’s imagination while encouraging the imagination of its viewers. Curated by Melena Johnson ’23.

View this exhibition during Grinnell College Museum of Art's open hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 11 AM - 6 PM Thursday: 11 AM - 8 PM Saturday & Sunday: 1 PM - 5 PM
