Overview

In partnership with the Grinnell Area Arts Council, Grinnell College presents A Star-Spangled Story: Battle for America as part of the celebration of the 250th Anniversary of America. Learn the dramatic inspiration behind Francis Scott Key’s poem and how the “The Star-Spangled Banner” came to be America’s national anthem.  Run time 51 minutes.

This program is part of Grinnell College’s Smithsonian Affiliate public film series, which features ten Smithsonian-produced films exploring different aspects of American life and history. Running from May through November, the series takes place at various times and locations across campus and in the community. Each screening includes collaboration with community partners, faculty, and staff to connect the films to local experiences, Iowa history, and the broader American story—creating shared space for learning, reflection, and connection.
