Join Grinnell’s ODEI for our 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration as we honor freedom, culture, resilience, and community. The ceremony will begin at 11:30 AM on Central Campus, weather permitting, or in the HSSC Auditorium in the event of inclement weather.
The Juneteenth flag was created in 1977 by activist Ben Haith, founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation, with assistance from illustrator Lisa Jeanna Graf. The use of red, white, and blue mirrors the American flag—a deliberate choice to affirm that enslaved people and their descendants are, and have always been, Americans. These colors also symbolize the nation’s ongoing responsibility to address and dismantle the injustices faced by Black Americans.

Following the flag ceremony, guests are invited to a luncheon at 12:00 p.m. in the HSSC Atrium, featuring catering from Royce Ann’s, Lady Jerk, and GiGi’s Chicken and Waffles.
Attendees can also explore a vendor fair showcasing Black-owned businesses and organizations in A1231, along with games and activities for all ages. Enjoy live music by The Feel Right Band of Des Moines, and outdoor fun with bounce houses located outside the HSSC.
We invite students, employees, and community members to come together in celebration, reflection, and joy as we honor the significance of Juneteenth.

Remembering Buxton is the story of Buxton, Iowa, a coal mining town in southern Iowa in existence from about 1900 to 1925. The town was half Black and half white. A total anomaly for its time, it was 100% egalitarian, with Blacks in mine management, city government, and professional life. Its neighborhoods and facilities were integrated. It was a unique haven for a brief golden time until the mine played out. This puppet show will be performed by Eulenspiegel Puppets, Grinnell Area Summer Camp third and fourth graders, with original music by Dartanyan Brown, a renowned Des Moines musician in the Iowa Rock and Roll, Jazz, and Blues Halls of Fame. This performance is part of Grinnell College Museum of Art's summer programming and is free and open to the public.

In this workshop you will use Play-Doh to make a small sculpture, then use a 3D scanner to render your sculpture and turn it into a 3D print! You will get to learn about how 3D scanning and printing works and make a lasting print of whatever your imagination can create! Due to the time involved in 3D printing, prints will be available to pick up after 4-5 days. Parents can drop off or stay and participate. This event will be offered weekly on Tuesdays from June 16-30. It is the same event each time, and each time you sign up you can make a new print!
