For More InformationAs a child, Abe Goldstien would spend Sunday morning’s listening to the Jewish Hour on a local radio station in Rochester, NY. Fifty years later, he rediscovered the music of his parents and grandparents and began playing Yiddish music on his accordion and with his band, The Java Jews. Yiddish 101 will introduce you to many of the songs and interesting stories behind them. You’ll learn how Irving Berlin came up with “God Bless America,” how a Yiddish tune is connected to Chunky candy bars, and how the Andrew Sisters, who weren’t even Jewish, had an international hit with a song from the Yiddish theatre. Yiddish Music 101 will celebrate Abe’s joy (with an emphasis on the “oy”) of Yiddish music.

Peter Marsho ’12 will share his life and career journey. Born and raised in Grinnell, Peter Marsho graduated from Grinnell High School in 2008 and Grinnell College in 2012. He received his DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2017 and has been practicing dentistry in Grinnell since then. Professionally, Dr. Marsho is a member of dentistry's prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon - an honor society based on faculty recommendation, merit, and clinical excellence. While at Grinnell College, Peter was involved in golf, the a cappella group G-Tones, and was on the Student Educational Policy Committee for the Biology department. Now, Peter enjoys spending time with his family. This event is not intended for minors. Grinnell College is not responsible for supervision of minors on campus.

Formed 10,000 years ago, they are a miraculous ecosystem of almost unparalleled scope, richness, and beauty. Yet over less than 100 years it has been transformed multiple times due to either intentional or non-intentional interventions by man. The session will begin with a presentation by Water Director Keagan Richmond and City Manager Russ Behrens, followed by small group discussions and a question-and-answer period. Topics will include radium levels, water hardness, the new nanofiltration water treatment plant, and long-term water planning. Residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and share input.

Physical Therapist Assistant Tim Stahl emphasizes the importance of proper fit and use of assistive devices, which can be challenging to navigate. Tim encourages attendees to participate in a hands-on walker and cane fitting activity following the presentation, which will be led by the licensed physical therapy team. The presentation will be delivered by Physical Therapy specialists from the Rehabilitation Clinic at St. Francis Manor, including Physical Therapist Ryan Dodd and Physical Therapist Assistant Tim Stahl.

Drake Community Library invites teens (grades 7 to 12) to join us for a Teen Writing Workshop featuring award-winning Iowa author L.T. Thompson in the Community Room.
Participants will learn the art of developing compelling characters—discovering what draws readers to certain personalities and how to bring them to life on the page. Teens will have the opportunity to create a brand-new character or continue developing one they are already working on, all while gaining insight from a published author.
Registration is optional but strongly encouraged. Those who register by April 26 will receive a free copy of Thompson’s young adult novel, Devils Like Us, while supplies last. Registration is available through this event listing.
L.T. Thompson (also known as Lin) writes stories centered on queer kids and teens discovering themselves and embarking on adventures. A proud library worker, Thompson is the author of The Best Liars in Riverview and The House That Whispers for middle-grade readers, as well as the young adult novel Devils Like Us. Originally from Kentucky, Thompson spent a decade in Boston and now resides in Iowa with their wife and cat.
The workshop is a great opportunity for teens interested in writing, storytelling, and creative expression to connect with a professional author and develop their skills in a supportive environment.

Film description: In rural Iowa, a Muslim chef and his Catholic wife fuse their cultures in the kitchen and beyond, serving dishes that blend Middle Eastern tradition with Midwestern bounty. But their greatest recipe is for belonging, as they build a community where everyone has a seat at the table.
To be followed by a moderated Q&A with Kamal Hammouda, Laura Fendt, and director Nich L. Perez. Popcorn will be provided; drinks are permitted. This event is free; no tickets are required. The film will run for 75 minutes, followed by discussion.

Directed by Nich Perez, whose work centers on ethical collaboration and mentorship, the film was produced in partnership with the Nonprofit Film Collective, The Iowa Kitchen, W&L, and documentary students. Through food, faith, and civic participation, KAMAL’S explores questions of identity, hospitality, and democracy in contemporary America.
