For families nationwide, being unable to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. is a tale of heartbreak.
But now, these families have a chance to pay their respects.
On Wednesday, Brooklyn, Iowa welcomed The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in D.C. You might have noticed a record number of bikes escorting the Wall as it passed through Grinnell. The replica, which is now standing at the BGM High School Football Field, will be open and free to the public through August 2, 2 PM.
Capt. William "Hawk" Albrach, a Vietnam veteran who returned home back in 1970, was yesterday’s keynote speaker for the Wall’s Welcome Home Ceremony.
“It was a difficult time to be a veteran,” recalled Albrach. “The media was against us. Public opinion was against us. Universities and schools were against us. But we hunkered down and tried not to dwell on the horrible things of war.”
The Wall That Heals features a Mobile Education Center and a replica of the In Memory plaque at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial site in Washington, D.C. Community members are encouraged to visit the wall, open 24 hours a day for early morning or late night visitors. The traveling Wall That Heals has visited many locations across the U.S to give families a chance to heal.

The Smithsonian Film Series continues at the Strand 3 with "The Green Book: Guide to Freedom". This film explores the history and significance of the Negro Motorist Green Book, the travel guide that helped Black Americans navigate segregation during the Jim Crow era and became a powerful symbol of resilience, community, and safe passage.
Following the screening, Valeriya Woodard '25, Public History Post Baccalaureate, will share her research of black history at Grinnell College, which includes Mrs. Edith Renfrow Smith '37, DHL '19, GHS '32. Free of charge and no RSVP required. Grinnell College, as a Smithsonian Affiliate, is offering a public film series, which features five more Smithsonian Channel films exploring different aspects of American life and history. Running through November 2026. Each screening will include collaboration with community partners, faculty, and staff to connect the films to local experiences, Iowa history, and the broader American story. The Smithsonian Film Series continues at the Strand 3 with "Epic Yellowstone: Down the River Wild". The Yellowstone River is the longest undammed river in the contiguous 48 states, flowing with a wildness that is both violent and vital to the creatures that are drawn to its banks. From Yellowstone Lake, North America’s largest high-elevation body of water, to the Missouri River, follow its nearly 700-mile journey over falls and through canyons into America’s heartland. See how Yellowstone’s bison, otters, coyotes, and thrill-seekers adapt to—and thrive in—these wild, untamed waters. Run time: 52 minutes.
Following the screening, Jordan Allsup, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Grinnell, will share an update on the Parks Master Plan. This program is part of Grinnell College’s Smithsonian Affiliate public film series, which features ten Smithsonian-produced films exploring different aspects of American life and history. Running through November, each screening includes collaboration with community partners, faculty, and staff to connect the films to local experiences, Iowa history, and the broader American story—creating shared space for learning, reflection, and connection.
