A New Chapter Begins: The Chamber Welcomes PFLAG Grinnell/Poweshiek County

What first began over 50 years ago in New York with a mother yearning to support her gay son has recently expanded to Grinnell and Poweshiek County. This morning Chamber Ambassadors gathered to learn more about one of the newest chapters: PFLAG Grinnell Poweshiek.

Much like the mother who helped found and support the launch of the now-national organization all those years ago, Monique Shore – president of the local chapter – found herself seeking to educate and support herself and others after her own daughter’s journey. As the parent of a trans daughter, Monique wanted to connect with other parents who, like her, were committed to learning how they could better advocate for their children.

She sought conversation, shared learning and connection. Alongside other local allies, PFLAG Grinnell/Poweshiek County officially launched in May 2025. “Our main goals are to support, educate and advocate,” shares Shore. The local chapter is a 100% volunteer-run organization, seeking to further the national mission to create a caring, just and affirming world for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.

The chapter carries this purpose forward through regular programming, including social gatherings, peer support meetings, and education. They also host monthly in-person gatherings for parents, allies and LGBTQIA+ individuals, and members can access print and online resources. The chapter coordinates and encourages advocacy efforts with elected officials at the local, state and federal levels as well. The chapter is currently exploring virtual meeting options to make participation more accessible for people across the county.

Since its launch, the chapter has been active across the county, tabling at the Grinnell Farmers Market, participating in area Fourth of July parades to raise awareness, and recently hosted a successful fundraising concert featuring musician Flamy Grant.

The chapter welcomes anyone from the greater Poweshiek County area, with events being free and open to the public. Local membership helps sustain both the local and national efforts and includes access to PFLAG publications, webinars, and online support groups.
