Join us, at the Grinnell College Museum of Art, for the opening of the upcoming exhibition, Reverent Ornament! Peterson Lecture: Helen Evans, Mary and Michael Jaharis Curator of Byzantine Art Emerita, Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Kelekians: From their Armenian origins in the Ottoman Empire to Contemporary Art and America: Dikran Kelekian, the founder of the dynasty, was one of the most important art dealers of the first half of the twentieth century. Many major museums have works of art that passed through his hands and those of his family. We will explore his family’s Armenian origins in conjunction with the Ancient Near Eastern, Islamic, Persian and modern art traditions that he promoted and in which he dealt. Reception to follow. Dr. Helen C. Evans is the Mary and Michael Jaharis Curator for Byzantine Art Emerita at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her widely praised exhibitions and gallery installations on the Byzantine world have won many major awards. She is a fellow of the Medieval Academy of America and past president of the International Center for Medieval Art and the Association of Art Museum Curators.
