Kintsugi (golden joinery or repair) is the Japanese technique of mending broken objects with urushi lacquer mixed with powdered metals (gold, silver, platinum). It is related to Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi which embraces the flawed or imperfect.

In this two-day exercise, we will use updated materials (gold powder and Gorilla epoxy) to mend and repurpose your treasured artifacts and heirlooms. Any item that can be glued (ceramics, glass, wood, etc.) is appropriate. We will also discuss methods of restoration of other types of objects d’arte. Please note objects are mended for aesthetics only and will not be utilitarian after the technique is applied. Bring your broken objects; repair materials provided. Prior to meeting, all objects must be cleaned of previous glues, adhesives, oils and dirt (can usually be done by placing items in a hot water bath). Please contact Lisa at lisabacon@comcast.net if you are not sure.

Lisa Bacon attended Drake University, studying art restoration in Florence, Italy. She achieved her BFA from San Francisco State University.
