Grinnell College Museum of Art
Gallery Talk: Art as Artist, Matter as Maker; Agency and Experience of Medieval Objects Grinnell College President and Professor, Anne Harris, will consider how the materiality of an art object guides both the artist’s hand and the spectator’s eye. This talk will displace human agency as the origin of art to put it in dynamic tension with the ways that matter asserts the experience of art objects. Works of medieval art, within their contexts of nascent capitalism, colonialism, power relations, and value, provide a critical lens to the contemporary agency and experience of objects in a talk whose trajectory travels from reliquaries to toasters.
